Another milestone, and a Giveaway!
What I was thinking over 7 years ago when I logged into Blogspot, created an online space for myself, and hit publish on my first post - I honestly have no idea! I had acted on a whim and it seemed like a good idea at the time. I had always, ALWAYS, wanted to be a writer, and having a blog made me feel like I had finally arrived. I day dreamed of mornings when I would just hop into the car, laptop in tow and drive to my favourite coffee shop. Once there, I would settle in with a deliciously frothy cappuccino, a warmed up chocolate croissant by its side, and type my day away. Today, I am here, doing exactly that and I can’t help but feel a tingle on deja vu coming on.
If you would’ve asked me 20 years earlier what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would’ve said - writer. What I would write about never really mattered; all I knew was that I just wanted to make a career out of it. And I knew in my heart that someday I would. When I received the offer to write Knack Indian Cooking, I was beside myself. My dream finally saw reality and I thought I got a lucky break. But the truth is this - yes, luck did play its part. But there’s more to it than just that. The publishers wouldn’t have come knocking on my door had I not had this blog. They wouldn’t have noticed this blog had I not put in all the hard work that I did. And most importantly, I wouldn’t have put in even half as much effort as I did, if it hadn’t been for all the love and support I received from you - my lovely readers.
I know this place has been neglected the past few years. I know I’ve randomly popped in and promised to come back - only to have disappeared again. I’m not writing today to offer you another apology. I’m not saying I’m back with a bang and promise to update daily. What I am saying however, is thank you. Thank you for bearing with me. Thank you for your countless emails asking me how I’m doing and requesting new recipes. Thank you, for everything.
As I sit here today, in my favourite coffee shop, I can’t help but smile as i read through the contract. It’s been signed, sealed and delivered - my new book, 500 Indian Dishes will be published by Quintet, and expected to hit stores by the end of the year. This can only mean ONE thing - the kitchen is going to be working over time! So, as I blend spices and chop ingredients to create new recipes, I’ll also be working on tweaking some of my trusty old favourites to blog about. But somehow it just doesn’t feel right to me to have so much cooking to do and only share a handful of them with you. Which is why I’m giving away 3 copies of my previous cookbook to get you busy too! Just leave me a comment and tell me what you like, don’t like, or even what kind of features/posts/changes you’d like me to add to the blog. I want your honest feedback, and I’m all ears! I’ll pick 3 random winners and send you each a copy of my book. Contest ends March 15, 2012 -so hurry!!!

A thought for some posts - perhaps some things that are easy to put together, or able to be mostly completed beforehand, and then completed in the evening to have a quick and tasty dinner?

More regular posts would be great!

Hi Meena! I love your site and your recipes. The random links to advertising within the post are a little distracting to me — I would prefer links to related posts or sites, but not advertising.

Yay for the cookbook!
And congrats on reaching the dream! Honestly? More posts, even short ones, are always nice. And the yellow copyright text below in the footer is really difficult to read, and the orangish/golden color of the links on the bottom for sharing are also a bit hard to read. But that’s pretty much it… Good luck with everything!

I can always use more quick Indian dishes!!! Congrats on the cookbook!!

Hi Meena,
Congratulations!!! Your second book will be out soon.
I got hooked to your blog four years back and have tried so many recipes with wonderful results. Would love to see your posts regularly but understand that you are busy with other endeavors. It would be great to see more vegetarian and low-fat recipes too whenever you get the time to post.
Best,
Amu

I love your site and have been cooking a lot of Indian food recently. I would be interested in a primer for creating spice combinations to have ready so that I could create the dishes pretty quickly. Also, how do you make gee without burning it! I have ruined some butter already. I would really like to read your 1st book and congratulations on your second.

Hello Meena, Congrats on the book contract. I’ve been
reading your blog since 4-5yrs and the best part about
Hooked on Heat is that the recipes are pretty easy with
simple ingredients.

congratulations
as a first step, can i suggest to please remove the link-based program you have on the site? i see a lot of green hyperlinks that are very annoying (being candid here, hope you don’t mind).
apart from that, would love to see some simple desserts from you

I really love the fact that you do not make your instructions lenghthy, it is precise and to the point with only a few steps. Makes life alot easier. Also i really like that you always put a picture with the recipe. I am a visual person and really appreciate the pictures you put up.
love your blog meena! Please keep the recipes coming.

I LOVE YOUR BLOG. I was looking for something different to cook one night and stumbled by your blog. I have been trying your recipes ever since. There are too many good ones to name. I am always looking for more posts, but understand the busy life. I will just make due with the old favorites for now!
March 3rd, 2012 16:23
Been following your blog for a while now. The only feedback I have would be frequent posting please and more variety in recipes. And congrats on the book deal, looking forward to more stuff.

I come over when I have a few minutes during the day and enjoy both your writing and the colorful photos. Recipes that highlight regional cuisines of India, with your unique take on them is something that will keep me coming back. And of course, gluten-free and other restricted diet modifications to well-known recipes will be helpful.
March 4th, 2012 20:20
Congrats on the book! I’ve been loving all the recipes on the blog and I would love to see more Indian 101 posts. And of course, more regular postings and recipes too (but I understand how busy writing a book can be!)

You were one of the first i followed so I miss your posts. So that is the first thing i would like. You had long a go made post on different kinds of gravies (Indian) Can you please post something like that.
Love some recipes taht have substitutes for most of the ingredients used.
I would love your books for me and me alone to hoard, gloat and drool over. after all this I hope i do cook just like you do.

Hey! I have often stopped by your site and admired the recipes and beautiful pictures… but never left a comment till now. Am super thrilled that you are writing your next book! Congratulations

I really do love your foodblog - the layout is pleasing, your pictures are great, and your recipe instructions are very easy to follow.
If there is any suggestion at all, I would say that I personally would enjoy some more traditional regional Indian recipe. It has been a long standing grouse that in India, we have forgotten our regional cuisine! Every city or town you go to, you will find the ubiquitous Punjabi or Udupi places… and yes even Chinese and Italian now! But you will be hard-pressed to find authentic Marathi food in a good restaurant in Mumbai, or good Andhra eateries in Hyderabad, and traditional Marwari or Rajasthani food in Jaipur!
The best way to preserve these dishes I feel is to popularise regional cuisine all over again

Hi Meena, I was first “hooked” to your blog through the visually appealing food pics. Though I could not taste the glorious food, the mouth-watering pics and easy to follow steps made up for it. I’ve tried few of you dishes and hope you continue to post more wonderful recipes which are fast to cook yet delicious..will be useful for full-time working mums like myself.
March 8th, 2012 21:20
Congratulations on your second book!! Yours was the first food blog I stumbled upon several years ago and I am so glad I found it. I’ve made many of your recipes and the results have always been good. The tandoori chicken pops look inviting. I must make those today!
March 12th, 2012 08:11
Yayyy.. congrats on completing 7 years of blogging. you know i am ‘hooked’ to ur blog

and congrats on 2nd cookbook. you go girl
I would love to see some simple and quick dinner ideas as most of the days I find myself completely lost at thinking what to cook for dinner at the end of busy work day!
March 13th, 2012 22:12
I would love to see a “quick tips” section. Thanks and good luck with the new cookbook!
March 15th, 2012 17:19
Congrats Meena on completing 7 years of blogging. You have a lovely blog and I am very frequent visitor. Love reading the introductions to each of your recipes and also the simple way in which each of them is written. I really hope you are able to frequently blog, although I understand you are busy with other things

I find the advertising links a bit distracting. Personally, I think that the colours (orange & green) for the various links do not suit the overall layout of your blog, something more bold would be more eye-catching

Hi Meena
Have been wanting to comment for a while, so thought what better time than an opportunity to win your cookbook :).
I landed on your blog searching a recipe for Gobi Manchurian long back. I tired it and to be honest it was an eye-opener for me that I could cook something to taste so good. Having started as a student and getting busy with work life after finishing school, I never had the time to learn to cook anything to taste like how it did in restaurants..I later realized it was because of the level of detail in your recipes.I am even ‘learning’ something about food and cooking, aside from just reproducing a list of instructions (which always give good results btw
)
Your blog has become my standard reference for making Gobi Manchurian, Kadi, Mutter Paneer and Sooji halwa..and several other recipes just for home or parties.
On the improvement side, I would like to suggest, that steps in the recipe that will strongly alter taste of the food if not done perfectly be emphasized/cautioned.
Thanks for writing these recipes and keeping a reader in mind and good luck with the great work you are doing!

Love your blog. I wish you blog more regularly, but I can totally understand how busy it can get now that I am a mother of a newborn too.
