Cook’s Book Club: Serving Crazy with Curry, by Amulya Malladi
I like to believe that I was born with a pen in one hand and a book in the other. Ever since I was a child, books have been my constant companion. I read when I’m bored, I read when I travel, I read when I’m drowning deep in work - in short, I read a lot and I read all the time. Add to that my absolute love for food, and you’ll find me cooking the books I read. well, not quite literally!
Because this is the inaugural month of the event, I’ve kept the date towards the end of May. This way, we will all have enough of time to get hold of the book as well as read it and cook! For upcoming months, please visit the event’s page here.
This month’s (deadline May 30th, ‘08) book club pick:
Serving Crazy with Curry, by Amulya Malladi
Absolutely love the book or not liking it so much? Where have you reached so far? Any inspiration on what to cook from it? Have any book related stories/anecdotes to share? Feel free to comment and discuss your reading experience with this book.

Meena, that is a wonderful idea. It will be interesting to see various take on the same subject. But since it involves acquiring and reading a book, I feel that the participants should be given more time, at least 6 weeks, IMHO. For the first month’s book, do you mean ‘Serving crazy with curry’?
I agree Suganya, which is why I’ll try and post the book selections a few months in advance. I stand corrected on the typo. Thanks, and I do hope you’ll join in.

I just added Serving Crazy with Curry to my hold list at the local library. Should have it early next week, with plenty of time to read, create, cook, and write.

Hi meena,
its a great idea. It would also be cool to have a page to have a list of recipes that bloggers have tried while reading from that book, so I can try out a recipe that others havent, and at the end you have covered the book - sort of. Too ambitious?

Fantastic idea. I’m dying to read the June book - I have already read The Kite-Runner.
April 7th, 2008 16:21
I think it is fantastic! There are so many books that include references to the dishes and food … and the ones that doesn’t can be inspiring too!
Just thinking of it for 2 seconds and I already have several good books that turn around food/flavours…
Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe - by Fannie Flagg
I would looooove to participate on this event!
You won’t believe it Aida, but those two books have been on my to-read list for ages now! Thanks so much for the recommendations, and hope to see you in the roundup.

Oh! What a coincidence - I just got the book from library last week after hearing about Amulya Malladi from a friend. I am so in - as long as I can find a veg. dish - I hope there is one
Glad you can join us A-kay! Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Hi, This is a great idea. I love reading books. I got this book from the library. I got to be honest with you, this is the first english book I have read which was written by an Indian author. I liked it. The family dynamics of an NRI/ABC family was very well written.I’m definetly inspired now :))
Join the club NG, I hope to see you at the recipe round-up!

Just ordered it. Love the idea. are we supposed to blog about the book and what we tried from it?
Hi FF, yes, you’d have to blog about the recipe you’re inpried to create from the book. Once you’re done, simply email me with the linmk and I’ll add it to the round-up. Will be looking forward to your entry!

Meena: This is a wonderful club to belong to - I have obtained all three books for May - July. Am currently at the part in “Serving Crazy for Curry” where the sister, Shoba, is thinking of having an affair with the Ukranian chap. Devi, meanwhile, has cooked her Cajun Prawn Biriyani - this could be my recipe, I am not sure. So far I find the characters a bit depressing as they are so unhappy; I am hoping that the cooking becomes a healing agent in the story, but am not going to read ahead.
I’m sorry you don’t seem to be enjoying the book Heather, I personally think it’s quite a good read. Thanks for your support and hope to see you in the roundup!

I sent you an email as I was so excited to join! But I am a little confused. Do I send you a review of the book at the end of the month?
Hi Amanda, Sorry to have missed your email. No, all you need to do is cook a dish inspired by the book, its story or the characters - no need of a book review! Hope to see you at the round-up!

It’s a wonderful idea!!

I just got a comment through which I came to know of this event. You know what, I thought of the same thing yesterday. An event of cooking with a book as a theme. Aapne mere dil ki baat kaise jaani? Great! Can I host one whenever available, pleeeease? I think I will wait for the next month’s event - I loved the way Khaled Hosseini talks of food in his books…yum yum:) Kudos to you, dearie.
Happy to hear to like the idea of the event Harini, books and food are my absolute passion - so what better way to celebrate them both! Hope to see you at the round-up soon.

I finished the book a couple of weeks ago (and I loved it)… but I’m having some trouble coming up with a recipe to feature on my blog inspired by the story. I had a transcendent experience with Gobi 65 at a restaurant and I’ve got a recipe for a chicken version I’ve been dying to try… but to go ‘pure Indian’ (or pure ANY one singular cuisine) doesn’t feel like it captures the spirit of the story. Help me find inspiration?
Go with your instinct Dolores. I found myself relating to how the protagonist cooks food depending on her moods - I almost always do the same! And never worry about going pure “anything” with cooking, I truly feel it’s the unexpected that makes the dish all the more fabulous. Good luck and see you at the round-up!

I know I am probably too late, but here’s my post.
